Are you tired of project managers setting impossible deadlines, projects where you're working against the client instead of with them, and colleagues keeping code and knowledge to themselves to appear smarter than they really are?
Are you tired of being hired out as an on-site consultant for long assignments? Would you rather work on exciting and diverse projects in-house, talented and helpful co-workers, and the freedom to choose a way of working that suits you? Then you could be the one we're looking for.
We're looking for talented, ambitious, and/or experienced Ruby developers. You've built and delivered a number of projects and knows what works and what doesn't, and you've understood that the most challenging part of software development isn't the code. Working at Varvet means that you're comfortable talking to clients, managing your tests and to-dos, and working to improve both yourself and your team. Maybe you have a fancy academic degree, or maybe you've gained your experience the hard way. Regardless of which you're driven by working in a really good team, with our clients' best interest at heart. By always learning and growing, and taking on exciting challenges. Together.
To make it clear — this is what we expect from you:
Solid knowledge of Ruby and Ruby on Rails
At least two years of development experience (but preferably a lot more than that)
Driven by empathy for users, clients, and colleagues
Deep experience with agile projects
Work test-driven with a strong quality focus
Can explain and reason about complicated concepts without jargon
Have the capacity to switch between low level details and big picture overview
Enjoy freedom with responsibility, have strong professionalism, and care for your craft
Varvet is the digital product agency part of Universal Avenue, where we through creative skills, world class technology, and above all openness and communication, help our clients build exciting digital services with a strong user focus. We work with everything from small startups that quickly want to validate their idea on the market, to large international companies launching new products. We are developers, designers, and strategists who work very closely with our clients, and above all each other. That is the only way to build outstanding software, and a great place to work for ourselves.
About working as a developer at Varvet
Varvet is a fairly small team, and we like it that way. We talk about everything. Both how we together shape the company and our client projects, where developers and designers work directly with the client. No project managers playing the game of telephone in the middle.
We build mobile apps and games, internal productivity tools, new Software-as-a-Service products, video streaming services and lots of other things, but it's how we do it that sets us apart. We work with test-driven development and pair programming to get the highest possible quality from the start. We believe in reducing bureaucracy and letting our developers use tools that enable us to ship quickly, get feedback, and iterate. We talk to each other, and our clients, a lot.
At Varvet we work with:
Ruby on Rails
Elixir and Phoenix
iOS (Swift and Objective-C)
If we have a secret weapon it is our ability to work together. Hard problems are always easier to solve as a team, and we think that it's easier to learn from each other if we let go of rock star attitudes and help each other. At Varvet we'll do our utmost to give you the support you need to grow. Pair programming has always been one of our hallmarks and it is so helpful, but can also be quite demanding. But they who can leave their ego at the door will over time flourish.
